When you drop into a butterfly, driving your knees down hard to create that distinct snap ensures:
1️⃣ Instant Ice Contact: Zero gap for low shots to trickle through.
2️⃣ Explosive Form: Building the habit of driving downward with intent rather than just letting gravity pull you down.

If your butterfly is silent, you aren’t driving down fast enough. Listen for the pop every single time. 🥅⚡

Stop waving your arms to move your stick. 🛑🏒

The Breakdown: A common error goalies make when trying to redirect low shots is sweeping their blocker arm independently across their body.

As Coach Joe points out, relying solely on your arm creates total chaos:
1️⃣ Unpredictable Rebounds: Swiping or stabbing with your stick throws off the angle of your stick blade, causing the puck to deflect into dangerous areas around or into your net.
2️⃣ Missed Pucks: Swinging your stick at the wrong time leads to pucks missing the stick blade and hitting our pads or going straight into our net.

The GataGoalie Strategy: Move your stick with your torso and shoulders. Keep your arms stable and locked out in front, maintain a proper blade angle, and use your upper body guide your stick blade into the path of the puck.
Rotate with your big muscles working in unison, keep the blade out in front, and steer those rebounds safely into the corners every time! 🥅

From the post to the far side—control every step. 🏒⚡

The Breakdown: Post play isn’t just about sealing the net—it’s about how explosively and accurately you transition out into the play.
In this drill from our camp session, we work on controlled post-integration and lateral movement.

Goalie in the first goal is simulating puck movement behind the net and transitioning into an overlap for a sharp angle shot.

Goalie in second net is simulating a pass out of the corner to an attacker who will walk with the puck before making a cross ice pass.

An important key to this drill is visualizing the game situation as you practice your crease movements and post integrations.

The ultimate test of lower-body control. 🧊⚡

The Breakdown: We’re throwing one of the hardest drilling sequences at our group today: The Slide & Power Push combination.

Moving consecutively in the same direction without resetting your feet in between is incredibly demanding. It requires massive core stability and flawless weight distribution. If you rush it, you lose your balance.

The Mechanics to Master:
1️⃣ The Initial Slide: Drive across cleanly while keeping your upper body completely independent and stable.
2️⃣ The Power Push: Instead of standing all the way up, you need to reload the edge of the push leg back into the ice to push into the same direction.
3️⃣ The Recovery Set: You must stop your slide immediately and set your feet firmly the moment the sequence ends. If you are still drifting when the shot comes, your positioning is compromised.

Take your time, focus on the control, and keep your shoulders perfectly square to the play. 🥅

If you hear this noise, your feet are leaving the ice. 🛑🔊

The Breakdown: Listen closely to your movements when you shuffle. Do you hear a loud, rhythmic “stomping” or “chopping” sound?

As Coach Joe explains in this video, picking up your feet during a shuffle is a subtle bad habit that can cost you a goal. When your foot leaves the ice:
1️⃣ You Aren’t Set: If a shot is released while your foot is in the air, you cannot drop into an effective save position.
2️⃣ Delayed Transitions: If the puck suddenly shifts or changes directions while your skate is elevated, you have to waste a crucial split second placing that foot back down before you can push the other way.

The GataGoalie Strategy: Keep your blades glued to the ice. A perfect shuffle is smooth, balanced, and silent. Keeping constant contact with the ice allows you to change directions instantly and stay perfectly set for the shot at all times. ❄️

Fatigue makes you sloppy. Control makes you consistent. 🏒🛑

The Breakdown: It’s the end of the third period. Your legs are heavy, your lungs are burning, and your focus starts to drift. This is exactly when young goalies give up dangerous, game-deciding rebounds right into the slot.

In this warm-up pattern from camp, after 2 hours of on-ice training, Coach Joe highlights the key to maintaining your discipline when exhaustion sets in:
1️⃣ Stick Steering: When a shot comes in low on the ice, actively use your stick blade to steer the puck out into the low-danger corners—not back into the slot.
2️⃣ Angled Deflections: When making a blocker save, guide the puck into the corner away from oncoming attackers with proper blocker save technique.
3️⃣ No Rebounds: If the shot hits your glove or chest, track it all the way in and trap it immediately to freeze the play.

No matter how tired you get, your goal is simple: eliminate second-chance opportunities by putting the puck in a safe zone or not letting it back in play at all. 🥅

Who says goalie skating drills have to be boring? 🏒⚡

The Breakdown: Goalie skating is the absolute foundation of everything we do, but grinding out repetitions can get repetitive fast.

In this session, we combined multiple essential movements into a high-intensity Goalie Obstacle Course to challenge our group’s conditioning, edgework, and cognitive responsiveness all at once.

The Routine Sequence:
1️⃣ Alternating C-Cuts: Establishing control and edge work to start.
2️⃣ Lateral T-Pushes: Forcing players to load their legs and drive with power.
3️⃣ Lateral Shuffles: Simulating quick angle changes across the ice.
4️⃣ Knee Drops & Sprints: Finishing with maximum effort to build that crucial explosive recovery strength.

It’s hard work, it builds massive leg power, and most importantly—the kids love it. (Even if they scream “No!” when asked if they want to go again!) 😅

3 days of hard work was concluded with a nice, relaxing, and fun family skate. It was nice to see so many family members join their favorite goalies on the ice.

Patience is your greatest weapon in the RVH. 🛑🏒

The Breakdown:
It’s easy to react instinctively and drop your paddle to the ice the moment a player threatens from below the goal line. But automatically defaulting to a paddle-down position is a dangerous trap.

In this video, we break down why premature commitment works against you:
1️⃣ Giving Up the Top: Leaning over to drop your paddle immediately takes away your upper-body height, exposing the top shelf to a quick, elevated shot.
2️⃣ Losing Mobility: Getting locked into an early paddle-down position leaves you entirely compromised if you need to push across the crease to catch a lateral play.

The GataGoalie Strategy:
When you seal the post, maintain a disciplined, upright stance and keep your blocker secure in the hole above your pad. Stay patient! Only commit to the paddle-down technique once the shooter officially commits to a wrap-around or a pass through the crease. 🥅

Aggressive depth isn’t always the answer. 🛑🏒

The Breakdown:
When you’re facing a shooter on a sharp, narrow angle, your first instinct might be to challenge way out on the white paint to make yourself look massive. But as Coach Joe explains in this video, overcommitting on your depth here can backfire.

In this video, we look at why you need to dial it back:
1️⃣ The Angle Advantage: At a sharp angle, you already cover most of the net just by standing there. Going too far out doesn’t give you additional coverage.
2️⃣ The Rebound Trap: If you’re too far out when making the save, any rebound out front forces you to cover a massive amount of ice just to get back to the middle of the crease for the second save.

The GataGoalie Strategy:
Keep your heels and hips just slightly ahead of the post. This gives you enough space to drop into a clean butterfly without getting blocked by the pipe, but keeps you close enough to recover quickly if the play shifts across the crease. Save the ultra-aggressive depth for the middle ice where the net is wide open! 🥅

Don’t slide blindly. 🛑👀

The Breakdown:
A lot of goalies make their lateral movements without setting their target direction first. When you move blindly across the crease, you end up wasting energy on secondary adjustments and leaving yourself completely out of position by the time the shot arrives.

To fix this, Coach Joe breaks down the Head-Hands-Feet sequence in this video:
1️⃣ Head: Identify where the puck is first. Your head initiates the entire rotation.
2️⃣ Hands: Point your glove, blocker, and stick toward the new angle. This will initiate your lower half to follow the rotation.
3️⃣ Feet: Twist your lower half into position, load up, and then execute your slide or T-push.

When you sequence your rotation first, you’ll always land perfectly square to the shooter. 🥅

Quiet hands make for clean saves. 🛑

The Breakdown:
A major pitfall when goalies build up power in their slides is letting their hands fly wildly in the direction they are pushing.

As Coach Joe emphasizes in this video, dropping or flailing your arms during a slide leads to two big issues:
1️⃣ Uncontrolled Slides: Wild arm movements throw off your center of balance, making it harder stay on angle with good butterfly posture and track the puck into the save.
2️⃣ Vulnerability: If your blocker or glove drops during the slide, you aren’t set up to actually stop the puck and control the rebound.

The GataGoalie Strategy:
Lock your arms in your baseline glove and blocker positions. When you push, make sure your upper body stays disciplined and independent of your lower body power. Your eyes, stick, and gloves should track the target cleanly—unbothered by the slide.

The easiest trick to reset your stick grip mid-game. 🏒🔄

The Breakdown:
When you’re in the heat of a game, your blocker hand is constantly moving, reacting, and taking impact. Naturally, your grip can start to slide up the shaft of your stick.

If your hand is too high, you are no longer in full control of your stick. Instead of fumbling around trying to adjust it, try this quick trick shown in this video:
1️⃣ Flip it: Turn your stick completely upside down so the knob faces the ice.
2️⃣ Drop it: Let the stick drop smoothly into your blocker hand.

The weight of the stick will slide it perfectly back into place right where it belongs. Quick, efficient, and gets you ready for the next play in seconds. 👌
